The clients wanted a wine room for the new extension on their house that would enable them to develop their wine collection. Socialising at home is also a love of theirs, so a tasting table was incorporated into the design. The couple have since found the room provides an additional benefit: it’s also a space for relaxation.

For this cellar we designed a new kind of drawer, using acrylic fronts, which allows a view into the drawer to easily identify the wine inside. The acrylic gives a lovely contrast to the wood and makes the drawers an eye-catching feature within the cellar. The drawers are grooved on the inside to hold the bottles in place. Acrylic rods fitted into the glass side panels also enhance further the wine’s display.

A conditioning unit with bespoke casing for a seamless fit ensures the room is maintained at the optimum temperature. Additionally, the inclusion of a unique wine monitoring system allows the conditions to be checked at any time remotely. An extra benefit with this system is that it records the cellar’s temperature, which is useful for resale or insurance purposes.

Capacity:
Up to 1163 bottles

Size:
4.3m wide x 0.5m deep x 2.3m high

Features:
Bespoke integral acrylic rods with display lighting. Combination of regular and large format bottles. Soft close display at the back for burgundy bottles, mixed with soft case racking. A high-level, built-in section houses the temperature control system unit.  The doors and glass panels are designed to ensure minimal heat and air loss from the room using the latest insulated glass and sealed units.

Oak Wine Cellar Galvin La Chapelle Restaurant Spitalfields, London

Oak Wine Cellar
Galvin La Chapelle Restaurant
Spitalfields, London

Being involved previously with other Galvin restaurants, we were asked to look at the proposed site of La Chappelle, and develop wine storing facilities especially for their fine wine collection.

Features: Three arched cabinets were installed inside the wall with a tailored temperature control system and the condensing units installed 45m away on the roof. Bespoke sealed doors were made from solid European oak and wine racking in white American Oak with acrylic displays. To best use the restricted depth of 220mm we installed large doors with scallop racking set forward to allow airflow whilst maintaining a stunning feature as clients enter the restaurant. The air split units were installed in the ceiling alcove. Under the stairs we installed a double depth racking system and fitted a specialist tin conditioning unit to maintain the temperature at 16-18 degrees. The doors and framework were made from European oak and finished in their specialist colour. We also constructed a movable display cabinet in oak and acrylic.

We turned a disused barn into a unique wine cellar and entertainment space, enabling the client to open the barn onto the proposed landscaped garden. The barn was divided into two areas – a glass screened and temperature controlled wine cellar, and an entertainment room containing a wine fridge and selection of display wine racking. To enable us to control the temperature, the enclosed area had to be insulated, a vapour barrier installed and finished with plaster board. Racking, doors and framework constructed in solid oak.

418 bottles for standard and magnums

Acrylic displays, scallop display racking and case racks. LED lighting with gold mirror fitted to all single bottle racking. Wine Guardian ducted system.

This wine cellar design brief also included the need for discreet storage of guns and ammunition, a room for entertaining and serving food and a ‘secret’ storage space for prized wines, all with bespoke cabinets. The area was already divided into various shaped rooms and alcoves, so the challenge was to successfully maintain a usable space that effortlessly flowed into each other while making each room appropriate in climate and ambience.

Features: Utilising an area designated to store ice, we removed all concrete dividers present on the stone plinth and levelled the floors, adding a waterproof membrane and sump pump, before tiling. Pipework was insulated and covered. Bespoke cabinets and LED lighting were installed. A bespoke sliding door made of scallop wine racking became the ‘secret’ door into the prized collection room. Other finishing touches included silver temperature barometers and wall mounted bottle opener.
