Basement Waterproofing - for your Custom Wine Cellar
Basement waterproofing is an essential part of any cellar build, renovation or conversion project. Selection of the appropriate basement waterproofing system/ product for your cellar or basement is a key issue.
When considering a conversion or upgrade of an existing basement or cellar care must be taken to follow the guidelines in BS8102 which clearly defines the environmental gradings desired for specific basement waterproofing usage.
BS8102 also points out the preferred basement waterproofing systems to be applied to differing structures.
There are two main systems used in the UK to waterproof basements or cellars
Cementitious Waterproofing
Cementitious basement waterproofing is a multi-coat system that is both durable and versatile. The coatings are predominately sand/ cement-based, polymer modified renderings which are mixed with water and applied to the basement internal walls. It sets to form a bond with the brick-work, creating an impervious barrier to the movement of water. Preparation of the substrate is an integral part of all cementitious basement waterproofing. Once installed the rendered walls and screeded floors ready for whatever finish you wish to apply.
Cavity Drain Membrane System
A studied membrane is attached to the walls, ceiling and floor of the basement using special sealed fixing plugs. Any water that enters the cavity behind the membrane is channeled to a sump or existing drainage. The walls are typically covered with plasterboard and a screed applied to the floor after the basement waterproofing has been completed.
